Nvidia takes on Meta and Google in the speech AI technology race
Join us on November 9 to learn how to successfully innovate and achieve efficiency by upskilling and scaling citizen developers at the Low-Code/No-Code Summit. At Nvidia's Speech AI Summit today, the company discussed its new speech artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem, which it developed through a partnership with Mozilla Common Voice. The ecosystem focuses on developing crowdsourced multilingual speech corpuses and open-source pretrained models. Nvidia and Mozilla Common Voice aim to accelerate the growth of automatic speech recognition models that work universally for every language speaker worldwide. Nvidia found that standard voice assistants, such as Amazon Alexa and Google Home, support fewer than 1% of the world's spoken languages.
Perceptron: AI saving whales, steadying gaits and banishing traffic
Research in the field of machine learning and AI, now a key technology in practically every industry and company, is far too voluminous for anyone to read it all. This column, Perceptron, aims to collect some of the most relevant recent discoveries and papers -- particularly in, but not limited to, artificial intelligence -- and explain why they matter. Over the past few weeks, researchers at MIT have detailed their work on a system to track the progression of Parkinson's patients by continuously monitoring their gait speed. Elsewhere, Whale Safe, a project spearheaded by the Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory and partners, launched buoys equipped with AI-powered sensors in an experiment to prevent ships from striking whales. Other aspects of ecology and academics also saw advances powered by machine learning.

AI models built for the Metaverse
There are several pieces of evidence to prove that AI that will form the backbone of the metaverse. The role of AI in the metaverse involves combining several related techniques like computer vision, natural language processing, blockchain and digital twins. In February, Meta's chief Mark Zuckerberg showcased a demo at the company's first virtual event – Inside The Lab, of what the metaverse would look like. He said that the company was working on a new range of generative AI models that would allow users to generate a virtual reality of their own simply by describing it. Zuckerberg announced a slew of upcoming launches like Project CAIRaoke – "a fully end-to-end neural model for building on-device assistants" which would help users communicate more naturally with voice assistants.

Languages in the metaverse: Why AI is critical for communication in the brave new world
We are excited to bring Transform 2022 back in-person July 19 and virtually July 20 - August 3. Join AI and data leaders for insightful talks and exciting networking opportunities. By the end of 2021, the word "metaverse" had generated a lot of hype. The topic was covered by almost every existing media outlet. But what is a metaverse and what is its purpose? To put it simply, it is cyberspace, a virtual world that should serve human connection. In a metaverse, a person is represented by an avatar, just like in a video game.

Digital Babel Fish: The holy grail of Conversational AI
Yesterday's science fiction is today's invention. Babel Fish, the "oddest thing in the universe", is a species of fish featured in Douglas Adam's magnum opus, The Hitchhiker's Guide to Galaxy. The fish, worn as an earpiece, translates all the languages that ever existed instantly. Babel Fish is no longer the stuff of dreams: Thanks to advances in AI, especially in the NLP domain, many tech giants are in the process of building a universal translator. To that end, Universal Speech Translator was a dominant theme in the Meta's Inside the Lab event on February 23.
